A GOOD APPOINTMENT
No finer proof of the Government’s confidence in his capacity and his disinterested service could have been given Mr James Hargest than his appointment to the Lands Advisory Board for Southland. In that position he will be called on to assist in advising the Minister of Lands in connect tion with settlement matters, and the appointment will be approved of throughout the length and breadth of the province. It is appropriate, perhaps, that this appoint ment should be announced on the eve of the election of the leaseholders’ representative on the Southland Lands Board, because it will serve to direct attention to the excellent service Mr Hargest has given during the ten years he has been a member of the board. Mr Hargest has been an effective but unostentatious participant in public affairs, and he has given a close attention to the affairs of the Lands Board during the period he has held a seat, on that body, which plays such an important part in the administration of publicly-owned properties in the province. A practical farmer, he enjoys the confidence of the farmers and of the public generally, who know him as a man who has acquitted himself well in the State’s service wherever and whenever the opportunity has offered. The United Gov ernment made its choice with the full knowledge of Mr Hargest’s qualities, and his appointment does credit to the Minister of Lands and to himself.
