Girl Guide Notes

“Tenderfoot.”)

Camp Adviser. Word has been received from Miss Kebbell that Mrs H. S. Cordery has passed with honours, in her camp adviser’s test paper and is now camp adviser for Southland. Campers’ Test. The Misses Mackie and Hedley, of Mataura, have gained their campers' licenses. Badge Examinations. The examination for the needlewoman’s and embroiderer’s badge, will be held in the Girl Guide Rooms on Thursday, May 29, at 4.15 p.m. Guides are to bring their certificates with them. The first class for Guides, sitting for ambulance examinations, will be held in the St. John Ambulance rooms on Wednesday, May 28 at 4 p.m.. Guides please be punctual. Training Camp. I have received the following account of training week from one of the guiders who attended:—The Guiders Training Camp held at St. John’s Girls’ School from May 13 to 20, was most enjoyable and successful. We were indeed privileged in gaining the services of Miss Burgin who is a Blue Cord Guider and came down from Auckland to conduct the training. During the mornings and afternoons the Guiders present were trained in company management and other work connected with guiding, and in the evenings when city guiders who were unable to reside in camp, joined our numbers we played games,, practised country dancing and finished up with a sing-song and story-telling round the fire..

On our first evening we were all very interested in a lecture given by Mr Jaquiery one astronomy and native trees and shrubs. This was very much appreciated as Mr Jaquiery touched on subjects with which we were not too familiar and which proved very helpful when on the following day we had a jolly picnic in the bush attached to Mrs J. G. Macdonald’s house at Otatara. We are indebted to our Provincial Commissioner for allowing us to wander through this beautiful native garden. It was such a delight to hear the songs of the various birds overhead. Some patient guiders managed to get some photos of them.

Saturday afternoon was our visitors’ day and a few people came out to see us. We were all guides for the afternoon with Miss Burgin as our captain and we had a company meeting. I am sure our visitors enjoyed themselves as much as we w - ho were taking part. On Sunday morning we attended church at St Paul’s. When Tuesday came and the time for parting.we Were all loath to say “good-bye” but then all good things come to an end and so our guiders’ camp. There were eleven in camp altogether. They were:—Miss Burgin (Auckland), Misses How and Marett (Dunedin), Misses Brotherston and Wilson. (Lumsden), Misses Hedley, Mackie and Munro (Matauraj, Misses Cumming and Gutzewitz (Invercargill), and Miss Liddell (Winton).
