Mr B. C. Galloway returned to Invercargill by the express last evening. Mr J. Butterick, a well-known farmer of the Ashburton district, is on a visit to Gore.

Mr T. E. K. Averill, of Parnell, Auckland, who has been visiting Southland, travelled to Dunedin by car yesterday afternoon. Mr J. Sutherland Ross, of Dunedin, who has been on a visit to Invercargill, returned to Dunedin by car yesterday afternoon. Mr J. Smith Nelson, Rector of the Winton District High School, has been appointed headmaster of the Waihopai School.

Mr Edward Bauman, a very old resident of Cardrona, died in the Lake County Hospital this week. Deceased had reached the great age of 90 years, and he had lived at Cardrona for over 50 years, having engaged in mining in that once famous field. The staff of George Mqir and Son met on Monday afternoon to bid goodbye _to Mr W. Carlaw, who is leaving for Christchurch. In presenting him with a travelling rug from his fellow workers, Mr McCulloch wished him success in his new sphere. Professor Pertival, Professor of Biology at Canterbury College, is at. present visiting Southland at the invitation of the Southland Acclimatization Society to investigate the deterioration of the fishing in the various rivers. He is accompanied by Mr A. W. Parrott, biologist to the Acclimatization Societies’ Research Board. On Wednesday Professor Percival and Mr Parrott visited the Oreti, Makarewa and Aparima rivers and took samples of the insect life. Yesterday morning they visited the Mataura and the Hedgehope and in the afternoon left for Lake Manapouri and Lake Te Anau. They return to Invercargill this afternoon and in the evening Professor Percival will give an address in the Mary Elizabeth tearooms on the problems of fresh water fisheries. In view of the recent discussion regarding the trout in Southland rivers a large number of anglers should be present at the lecture, to which an invitation is extended to all interested.
