PAYMENT BY RESULTS. FARMER’S SOLUTION OF PROBLEM. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, May 22. Piecework or payment by results as a solution of the unemployment problem was urged by Mr C. Mclntosh in his presidential address to the Provincial Conference of the North Canterbury District branch of the Farmers’ Union. He said: “The unemployment situation seems to be getting gradually worse. It must be tackled in a business way. We appear to be starting at the wrong end. It is better to erect a fence at the top of a precipice than to maintain an ambulance at the bottom. In my opinion it is not the high rate of wages paid that is the cause of unemployment, but the low output per man for wages received which makes the article manufactured too costly, thereby not finding a ready sale.
