FLOODED!

RAIN BREAKS THROUGH DEPARTMENTAL STORE’S ROOF. ' DAMP ITEMS OF MANTLES, MILLINERY AND UNDERWEAR TO BE CLEARED. The heavy rains which fell on Tuesday night broke through that portion of the Departmental Stores now under reconstruction and deluged sections of the Fashion Showroom, Millinery Salon and Ladies’ Underwear Department. Employees of the firm arriving early in the morning discovered a flood right in the centre of the store and water gushing down ones of the pillars. Help was promptly summoned and racks and tables of apparel removed from the danger zone. Most damage was done to the carpets, but many lines of new Winter Fashions were drenched. These lines must be cleared away immediately—presenting to the ladies of Southland the chanco to secure the latest fashions at opportunity prices. Some of the offerings are but slightly damp, none are seriously damaged in any way. ' Sleeveless Cardigans in assorted colours —slightly damp—formerly 7/11—to go for 3/11. A few new Jumper suits—regularly 69/6 to £5 10/—now to be cleared from 29/6 to 75/-. Slightlv wet Raincoats —now priced from 15/6. Several new Winter Frocks and Fur Necklets—only very slightly affected by the flood—will also be cleared. The water that came into the Underwear Section affected many lines of Nightgowns, Woven Bloomers and Cotton Vests, all of which will be cleared at half the regular prices! Ladies’ Ready to Wears, slightly damp—regularly 15/6—now 9/11. Maids’ Tweeds and Velour Coats—one of our latest purchases—will be cleared at 15/6 as they were slightly affected by the rain. Usually these were 22/6 to 39/6. The sizes are 20 to 36 inches (to fit girls 4 to 14). H. AND J. SMITH LTD., The Departmental Stores.—Advt.
