FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.

REPORTS OF COMMITTEE The fortnightly meeting of the Invercargill City Council was held last evening. There were present:—His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. D. Campbell) and Councillors V/. Hinchey, J. Robertson, T. O’Byrne, A. J. Ball, J. G. Imlay, F. G. Hall-Jones, C. J. Brodrick, J. Gilkison, H. J. Macalister, A. C. Ford, G. J. Reed and E Sheehan. The following clauses of public interest appeared in the reports of committees as adopted by the council: Works. Water and Gas Mains, Kew Hospital: Having received a letter from the South Invercargill Borough Council asking for a plan showing the proposed [xisition of water and gas mains to be laid through the South Invercargill Borough to Kew Hospital and asking that the council appoint representatives to meet it to discuss the question of maintenance of boundary streets and other matters arising from the alterations to the boundaries; having directed that the necessary plan be furnished to the South Invercargill Borough Council and that it be informed that 'the City Engineer would be pleased to confer with it in connection with the matters raised.

Invercargill Fire Board: Having received a letter from the Invercargill Fire Board stating that certain chimneys in the city were constructed in such a way that they could not be cleaned from the fire-place and that in other cases the backs of fire-places were not properly fitted in, pointing out the risk which existed and requesting that steps be taken to ensure that chimneys were properly constructed; having requested the City Engineer to confer with the Fire Superintendent in the matter. Contract for Street Surfacing: Recommend that the contract with Messrs Isherwood and Bellam for street surfacing work under the £60,000 streets loan be continued next season in accordance with the schedule of prices and conditions of contract agreed upon. Finance. Rebate of Theatre Hire: (a) Having received an application from the Central Methodist Church for a rebate on theatre hire fees in connection with a concert held for the benefit of the Methodist Church mission work; having no recommendation to make, (b) Having received an application from the Home Missions Department, Methodist Church, for a rebate in theatre hire fees in connection with a concert held for the benefit of needy Maori children; having no recommendation to make, (c) Having received an application from the organizer of the Poppy Day Fund for a rebate on theatre hire fees in connection with a concert held for the benefit of Poppy Day fund; having no recommendation to make.

Ladies’ Challenge Shooting Shield: Having received a letter from the City Guards Defence Rifle Club asking the council to take charge of the Ladies’ Challenge Shield which is at present in the possession of the club; recommend that the council accept the shield to be hung in the entrance vestibule of the Town Hall.

Increase in Expenditure of Invercargill Fire Board: Having received a letter from the Invercargill Fire Board stating that the increase in expenditure for the current year was made necessary mainly by the extension of the board’s area to include the amalgamated portion of South Invercargill and that the board endeavours to keep its expenditure as low as possible on all occasions.

Workers’ Educational Association: Having received from the Workers’ Educational Association a report on its activities during the past year together with an application for renewal of the council’s subsidy of £l5 for the year 1930; recommend that the subsidy be renewed. Invercargill Scottish Pipe Band Subsidy: Having received a letter from the Invercargill Scottish Pipe Band stating that a number of concerts had been given by the band during the year as well as attendance at benefit concerts and public functions and asking for a renewal of the council’s subsidy of £l5; recommend that the subsidy be renewed.
