HOPES FOR THE FUTURE.

Mr C. Ulm, colleague of Mr Kingsford Smith in the latter’s epic flights, and joint managing director of Australian National Airways, does not share the recent prophecy that in ten years’ time it will be possible to make a non-stop fight from Australia to England in aeroplanes in three days. He says he believes the day is fast approaching when the ordinary cruising speed of commercial and passenger air liners, such as those now operating daily on the Sydney-Brisbane airway, will be 200 miles an hour. The cruising speed of the liners on that airway is now 110 miles an hour, with a top speed of 117 miles an hour. Mr Ulm also says that, with improved designs of aircraft, practically automatic steering will overcome the risks of “blind” flying. The total mileage of Australian National Airway liners, during their three months’ operations between Sydney and Brisbane, means, in effect, that they do a mileage equal to a trip round the world every 25 days With the extension of the daily service to Melbourne, in four or five weeks’ time, the total mileage covered between Brisbane and the Victorian capital will mean a world flight in distance about every 15 days. The company proposes to equip all its liners with two-way .wireless communication.
