FEDERAL TARIFF

EFFECT ALREADY BEING FELT.

BUDGET. DEFICIT ANTICIPATED.

(United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.)

Canberra, May 20.

The effect of the Ministry’s tariff surcharge and prohibition is already being felt. To balance the estimated revenue of £44,450,000 from Customs and excise duties nearly £7,500,000 must be collected before the end of June, but it is unlikely that more than £6,000,000 will be received from these sources. The Treasurer, Mr E. G. Theodore, budgeted for a surplus, but it is now expected that there will be a deficit of from £1,000,000 to £1,500,000.
