SITUATION GROWING WORSE. ADMISSION BY MR THOMAS. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) London, May 19. Mr Neville Chamberlain (Conservative) initiated a debate on unemployment in the House of Commons. He emphasized the seriousness of the situation. He said he did not ask the Government to adopt safeguarding, but he asked for a declaration that there would be no further interference with the existing duties for a term of years. Mr J. H. Thomas, Lord Privy Seal, said the problem of unemployment could never be solved by any Government unless the Government could carry with it the heart and the co-operation of the workers. He admitted that unemployment was growing worse and would increase by 27,000 tomorrow. GOVERNMENT CRITICIZED AN AMENDMENT DEFEATED. (Rec. 7 p.m.) London, May 19. In the House of Commons Mr D. Kirkwood (Labour) criticized the Government for not adequately meeting unemployment. An amendment to reduce the vote of the Department of Labour was rejected by 229 votes to 209. The Clydeside group, with Mr Oliver Baldwin, Mr W. J. Brown, Mr J. Beckett, Mr A. Fenner Brockway, Miss Jennie Lee and Mr E. F. Wise, all Labour members, abstained from voting.
