OTAUTAU NOTES

FOOTBALL. (From Our Correspondent.) The junior match, Otautau v. Ohai, was played on the Otautau recreation ground on Saturday and resulted in a win for the local team by 12 points to 8. Mr H. A. Booth controlled the game. In the senior competition the same day Nightcaps met Thornbury at Nightcaps, the former winning by 24 points to 5. Mr C. Mills officiated as referee. Euchre. The largest attendance so far this year was registered at the euchre social last week in the Fairfax Hall in aid of the ball funds. Mrs Sheridan was the winner of the ladies’ section, and received a rubber apron, while Mr Rankin was awarded a pair of socks for the gentlemen’s prize. Mrs Devanney and Mr J. Mclntosh secured the consolation prizes. Town Board. The monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Monday evening, and was attended by Messrs E. Harrington, A. Chisholm, H.’Chandler, R. Collett and W. A. E. H. Fraser. In the absence of the chairman, Mr Fraser was voted to the chair.

Mr W. G. Pearce, inspecting engineer, forwarded a communication from the chairman, Main Highways Board, stating that the board agreed to make an advance of £333 to the Otautau Town Board to provide the proportion of the cost of sealing the main highway through the town district.

Mr W. McGill, acting secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Invercargill, wrote thanking the board for the returns in connection with poppy sales, Mr John Fisher personally, and also all who had assisted with the sales in the Otautau district for. the very good work undertaken in the interest of a good cause. The same writer advised that arrangements could be made for a grant from the Poppy Day fund for work in the Otautau district, provided the board was prepared to subsidize same £ for £. This was only supposed to be done where a sub-association was in existence, and although there was none in Otautau at present he asked that an endeavour be made to ascertain whether there was any chance of forming one.—Left in the hands of the Works Committee.

The secretary of the Western District Ladies’ Hockey Association wrote asking for permission to charge for admission to the recreation ground on the occasion of the trial matches on June 3.—Granted.

The Under Secretary, Department of Lands and Survey, forwarded a notice in connection with the protection of native birds, and advised that the Department, of Internal Affairs was willing to supply calico notices drawing attention to the provisions of the Animals Protection and Game Act with respect to the protection of native birds, and asked whether the board was prepared to display the notices in the various public domains. —Notices to be erected. The Southland Electric Power Board forwarded the usual notices regarding the general rate and in regard to the partial exemption of general rates. Mr W. Pearce, Main Highways Board, advised that candidates who wished to sit for competency examinations should inform him immediately. It was resolved that the surfaceman be handed the letter.

The chief inspector of explosives forwarded a copy of the rules governing alterations or re-construction of projection rooms. It was resolved that these be put up in the hall. It was resolved that a six-inch pipe be placed across the road in Devon street, above Mr E. Fisher’s front entrance, and that the present drain be sealed. It was decided to repair the footpath in Chester street. School Committee.

The monthly meeting of the School Committee on Monday evening was attended by the following members:—Messrs G. Sinclair (chairman), E. Jellyman, A. Fisher, J. G. C. Baker, McCrostie.

The chairman extended a welcome to Mr Jellyman, on behalf of the committee stating it was gratifying to see men having children at school offering their services. He was sure he would make a useful member, and would do his best in the interests of the school and the children. Mr Jellyman thanked the chairman for his remarks.

The headmaster (Mr Theo. Walker) reported that the roll number for the period ending May 9, was 223, and the average attendance for the term was 202. The board’s carpenters were at present busy making alterations to Standard VI room, so as to improve the lighting conditions. A built-in cupboard for holding library books in Standard VI room was urgently needed.

The question of the installation of the cupboard was left in the hands of the chairman and Mr Thomson.

The chairman said it was only fair to state that the school had been left in good condition after the Bible class camp. It was gratifying to note that the average attendance was keeping up well.

Miss Gardner, secretary Young Women’s Bible Class committee, wrote thanking the committee for the use of the school. They appreciated the action of the committee in allowing the use of the school buildings for the camp. The acting secretary of the Southland Education Board wrote stating that the Department had approved of the subsidy on the committee's contribution of £lO for the purchase of library books and infant room apparatus. The chairman stated that the books had come to hand. • The Minister of Education advised that in reply to representations made with regard to consolidation of schools at Otautau, it had been decided to hold the matter over until more unanimity was reached on the matter.

Messrs Baker and Jellyman were appointed a visiting committee for the month. The visiting committee, Messrs Sinclair and McCrostie, presented the following report: We inspected the school and grounds and found everything in good order with the. exception of the conveniences, which required to be attended to. A fastener was needed for the school gate on the northern entrance. The hedges were being trimmed and a footpath would be made during the next few days to the boys’ conveniences. We recommend the committee to get all the old timber lying about cut into 18-in. lengths so that it can be utilized for firing. The report was accepted and the recommendations were approved.
