Fireblight has reached Manawatu, several affected trees being found within the borough. These were destroyed to prevent tile spread. Orchardists are endeavouring to have the area brought under the Firebfight Act which gives power to remove hawthorn which acts as a host for the disease. Although known in America for the last 100 years, fireblight, only reached New Zealand in December, 1919, the first outbreak being in the Auckland diatriek
