KEEN COMPETITION

Napier, January 18.

The keen competition which characterised the opening of the third Napier wool sale last night was maintained throughout the remainder of the sale to-day, and 90 per cent, of the catalogue of 30,000 bales was sold under the hammer at prices generally in advance of the-Tates ruling at the December sales.

Merino and Southdown both showed a good improvement. Halfbred increased on an average by one penny and crossbred was up about three farthings.

Lambs were a half-penny dearer. Pieces and bellies showed a decline on the somewhat extreme prices ruling in December. The range of prices was:—

Melbourne, January 18. The wool sales have ri with very keen competition. Best merinos advanced 5 per cent, compared with the closing rates last year. Other sorts were unchanged. Good clearances were affected.—A. and N.Z.

(Rec. 1.25 a.m.) Sydney, January 18. The wool sales’ market was exceedingly firm under good all round competition, values generally being on a par with the opening day’s rates.
