ATHLETICS

INVERCARGILL CLUB

EVENING MEETING

SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES

The Invercargill Amateur Athletic Club held its fourth evening sports meeting of the season at Rugby Park last evening, under excellent weather conditions. The attendance of the public was again disappointing, there being not more than 150 spectators present.

The tracks were in excellent order and some remarkably fast times were recorded, particularly lOsecs for the hundred yards. This event was won by McCorkindale (9yds), while B. Geddes (scr), who was beaten by the narrowest of margins, must have registered about the same time. Geddes, who has been running unimpressively of late, signalised his return to form by a brilliant win in the 220 yards event, which was covered in the fast time of 22 4-ssecs. The winner of the half-mile event was W. Fraser (45yds >. who won easily by about ten yards in 2mins 3 4-ssecs. C. Rout, who has not been seen in action at Rugby Park for some weeks, won the hop, step and jump event by a good margin. As usual, the meeting was capably managed by the I.A.A.C. officials. ’The starter was Mr T. Rodgers, who had some slight trouble with his fields, but who sent the men away well in most instances. Messrs R. M. Isaacs and A. H. Courtis officiated as judges. The results were as follows: 109 Yards Handicap.—First heat: McCorkindale 9yds, 1; B. Geddes scr, 2; Howard 6yds, 3. Five started. After one break the field was sent away smartly. McCorkindale won by five feet, Howard being about three yards back. Time, 10 3-ssecs. Second heat: J. Anderson 10yds, 1; A. Bissett 3yds, 2; R. Smith syds, 3. The start was uneven, as several men broke and the pistol refused to fire when the starter attempted to recall the field. O. Hormann (4yds) was left at the start and did not run. Anderson won by about five feet, while Bissett beat Smith for second place by a few inches. .Time, 10 l-ssecs. —Final.— McCorkindale 9yds 1 B. Geddes scr 2 A. Bissett 3yds 3 The winner was the first out, with Geddes and Bissett moving up fast from the back. Near the tape Geddes put in a great spurt, but was beaten by the narrowest of margins. Bissett was about a yard further back. The time was announced as lOsecs, which, if correct, must mean wonderful performances on the part of both Geddes and McCorkindale. 220 YARDS. B. Geddes scr .. .. 1 J. Archer 14yds .. .. .. .. .. .. 2 P. Patton syds . 3 The field rose to a perfect start. Archer took command and led until a few yards from the tape. In the meantime Geddes was coming through rapidly from scratch and was lying fourth at the turn into the straight. About 50 yards from home Smith, who had been running just behind Archer, fell heavily. Geddes then came through and spurted ahead to win by a few inches in an exciting finish. Patton was less than a stride back. Time, 22 4-ssecs.

HALF-MILE HANDICAP. W. Fraser 45yds ............ 1 C. C. Hormann scr .... _ .. .. 2 O. Hormann scr 3 Few changes took place in the first lap, though the field was closely bunched at the beginning of the second round. Early in the second lap J. Aitken (30yds) took the lead, but was unable to stand the pace and fell back. Fraser then became prominent and established a big lead. A. Bissett and Cleland, who were lying at the tail of the field, withdrew. Fraser went on to win by about ten yards from C. C. Hormann. O. Hormann was five yards back third. Time, 2mins 3 4-ssecs. TEAMS’ RELAY RACE. Bissett, Patton, Geddes, scr .. .. 1 Smith, Aitken, Howard, 12yds .. 2 The only starters. The second team lost valuable time when Aitken was passing the stick to Howard. Howard had a slight advantage at the commencement of the final run, but Geddes came up fast and beat his opponent by about two yards. PUTTING 181 b SHOT. J. Archer 4fr (28ft lin) ...... 1 Purdue 4ft (27ft Tin) 2 Hamilton scr (25ft 2in) 3 Five competed. The distances given include handicaps.
