PACIFIC RELATIONS
BRANCH OF INSTITUTE FORMED IN WELLINGTON. SIR JAMES ALLEN PRESIDENT. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, January 17. A branch of the Institute of Pacific Relations, to consider contacts and conflicts between Pacific peoples, and promote understanding and co-operation, has been formed in Wellington, as the result of the visit of Mr J. M. Davies, after holding several well attended meetings. Sir James Allen, K.C.M.G., has accepted the presidency of the branch in New Zealand and the vice-presidents are:— Sir George Elliot, chairman of the Bank of New Zealand, Sir Maui Pomare, member of the Government representing the Native race, and the Hon. J. B. Gow, M.L.C. At a meeting held in Wellington, the following council was elected: —Professor C. E. Hercus, Dr. H. E. Gibbs, Dr. Guy H. Scholefield, Dr. Marsden, Miss N. E. Coad, Messrs D. S. Smith, C. S. Falconer, W. H. Coker, A. L. Cropp, Walter Nash, H. F. von Haast J. D. Gray.
Dr. Scholefield was elected hon. secretary in place of Professor Condliffe, who is leaving to take up the position of Research Director for the Institute, and V. N. Beasley was appointed-hon. treasurer. Steps are being taken to enrol members, and to form groups of which for the present there will be one each in the four chief centres. The next international conference will be held in Honolulu from July 15 to 28.
