SUPER SPEEDING
DIFFICULTY OF ATTAINMENT. PRESSURE FOUR TONS TO INCH. London, January 16. In connection with the attempt to manufacture a motor car tyre capable of travelling 200 miles per hour, it is stated that at that speed any one point of the tyre hits the ground thirty times every second, thus generating a heat which rubber has not yet withstood. Similarly every square inch of tread experiences the force of four tons tending to burst the tyre. Should a piece become detached it could fly through the air for half a mile. A recent trial necessitated the erection of a barricade to protect the spectators. The tyre was subjected to the same strain as on the track. Hie experiment gave the most successful results. —A. and N.Z.
