BREACH OF CONFIDENCE
PREMATURE PUBLICATION OF REPORT. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, January 16 The newspapers’ “breach of confidence” incurred a severe reproof from the Trade Union Congress, which issued a statement that misunderstanding had been caused by the premature publication of portion of the T.U.C. report circulated to the conference delegates and also to newspapers with a request for non-publication before the meeting of the conference on January 20. The statement says that the confidence was violated not by the capitalist newspapers but by a journal claiming to be exclusively a trade union and Labour paper, namely the Sunday Worker which erroneously described the report as a “secret document.” The council adds that premature publication is calculated to prejudice the minds of delegates, and reflects discredit on Labour journalism. It appeals to the Press not to make this dishonourable action an excuse for publishing the report before the appointed date.—A. and N.Z.
