AUSTRALIA’S DRINK BILL

FIGURES FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Adelaide, January 17. The Government Statistician reports that the South Australian drink bill between 1914-15 and 1920-21 nearly doubled, due to a substantial increase in price, while during the same period the quantity consumed per head of population and convictions for drunkenness per thousand of population decreased considerably. From 1920-21 to 1925-26 the value consumed per bead increased only slightly, but there has been a steady increase in convictions. For the year ended June, 1925, the drink bill was £5 7/11 per inhabitant, compared with £5 5/2 the previous year and £2 *9/2 in 1914-15.—A. and N.Z.
