Mair, H. E. Niven, J. C. Thomson, J. H. Reed, J. Waugh, W. Couscr, W. Ashley and A. L. Wyllie. VISITING COMMITTEE. The Visiting Committee recommended as follows; “That a thorough inspection of the storm water drains be authorised.” “That the Board purchase sections 22 and 23 in Forth street provided that a right-of-way can be secured through (he United Friendly Societies’ premises. The Director was authorised to have the storm water drains attended to, and Messrs McDonald, Hoyles, Tait and Reed were appointed to inquire info the values of the Forth street sections and to secure an option over them. DIRECTOR’S REPORT. The Director reported that there had been an average of 40 absentees out of 2SO from the day school fiuring the past six or seven weeks, due almost entirely to sickness of various kinds. The granting of a holiday to all school children, at the request of Gen era! Birdwood, raised the question of what holidays should he given to students in the Technical day school, and upon whose authority. Unlike other schools, the Technical i school earned its capitation from the attendances of individual students, not from the average attendances, and should a sufficient number of special occasions for holidays arise during the year, the dayschool capitation might be seriously affected. The day school lost £3 15 s for every student whose attendance fell below fourfifths of tho possible maximum. It was decided to apply to have the basis of capitation altered to that applying to secondary schools. CORRESPONDENCE. The director of the Christchurch Technical College wrote, stating that the Board of Managers of the College had approached the Minister of Education recently in regard to a grant for the purchase of 50 to 193 acres of land for instructional purposes in connection with the agricultural course of the Technical High School. The Department's reply disclosed that no assistance could be expected from that direction in the meantime. He had therefore been instructed to ask for the co-operation of thcSoutbland Technical College Board in urging upon the Minister the necessity for attaching small farms to Technical Colleger where aericultural instruction was given. The director was instructed to write to the Christchurch Board stating that the Southland Board considered that it would be wise to wait until the Department’s scheme came out. It was also decided to write to the Department inquiring what its intention was in regard to setting up farms tor agricultural instruction. Accounts amounting to £530 were passed for payment.
