The Australian Press Association agency telegraphed Archbishop Mannix asking for 1 his version of the Ventura incident. Dr j Mannix replied: “The whole affair is a | foolish story based on a misunderstanding. My first act, witnessed by thousands, on j setting foot on American soil at San Franj cisco was to salute the American flag and I stand uncovered during the playing of the j American national anthem, I have repeated j this act on several public occasions since [ my arrival.”
