HOCKEY CARNIVAL
The Ladies’ Hockey Carnival will be opened by the Mayor (Mr John Stead) in tlie Victoria Hail at 2 o’clock this afternoon. It is many years since the Southland Ladies’ Hockey Association made a call upon the local public, and during the war the ladies neglected the finances of the Association in order to work for patriotic functions. Their sources of revenue are few and the Association has not a playing area at which a charge can be made for admission. To fulfil the fixtures the girls have frequently to make trips to.the country districts, and as the Association is not financial enough to assist them, the game has been an expensive one for the players. The ladies should meet with ready support from the public, for whom the carnival will hold nvany attractions. In addition to the excellent musical programmes to be contributed by the Hibernian Band, the Orphans’ Club Orchestra and Mr Sutherland’s party, many other entertaining competitions and side-shows should provide plenty of amusement.
