SUGAR SUPPLIES
THE PRICE ARRANGEMENT. SAVING TO THE PUBLIC. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 21. 'The chairman of the Board of Trade, in a statement, said the aggregate saving effected for the New Zealand general public? during the past three years as a result of~ the arrangement.- made with the Colonial Sugar Refining Company was approximately £2,000,000 by comparison with the amount that would have been paid if the market for sugar had been free here as elsewhere. The Government had entered into an agreement with the Colonial Sugar Company whereby raw sugar would be purchased in Fiji by the Government and refined by the company at its own expense and distributed. This system would operate from July 1. It was anticipated that the quantity would be in excess of that refined last year. The necessity for allocating the supplies still continued under the Board of Trade. AN ABNORMAL DEMAND. (Special to the Times). CHRISTCHURCH, June 21. That there is an abnormal demand for sugar from the public, quite above the legitimate requirements, is the opinion of men in the trade who were seen by a reporter to-day. The reason given for this is that next month there will be an advance in the price. For some weeks past a large pro[Kmion of the public have been buying as much of the commodity as it can possibly get, in order to make provision again- 1 the rise. To this fact the present scat city is due.
