THE LONDONDERRY RIOTS. ORIGIN OF THE TROUBLE. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Coble Association.) LONDON, June 20. In connection with the outbreak of rioting, looting and incendiarism which began in Lo...loncierry on Friday night, it appears that a party of Unionists, armed with rifles and revolvers, assembled in the waterside district, and neighbouring Catho lie residents, fearing an attack, sent girl messengers across the river to summon help, borne Sinn Feiners and Nationalists came, and their arrival resulted in many street battles, residents crawling out of the danger zone along roofs. T oops dispersed the rioters, but sniping continued -or three hours. Hundreds of soldiers and police patrolled the district on Saturday night, but more serious rioting btoko out in a new qua.ter. Many people were held up and attacked in the streets and fatalities occurred. An Irish American who served in the British Army, was fatally shot down in the street.
Two Sinn Feiners shot workmen entering a factory'. A constable was held up and badly beaten by drunken men. who placed his body on a donkey cart and drove it to the hospital. Both sections of rioters in dulged in looting.
Five were killed and 100 injured, 10 seriously. The fire brigade was called out. On Sunday afte-noon Sinn Feiners chased firemen from a fire and drove the engine to the Sinn Fein quarter. A BATTLE TN CORK. ATTACK ON POLICE BARRACKS. LONDON, June 21. (Received June 21. 9.5 p.m.i Two hundred Sinn Feiners made a desperate night attack on th? barracks at Farran, fourteen miles from Cork, using Gelignite. They blew up a corner of the barracks, and followed this up with a fusilade of revolver and ri’e r-hots. The garrison pluckily held out until reinforcements arrived, and put the attackers to flight. The Sinn Feiners abandoned three motor cars. The barracks were wrecked. THE RAILWAVMEN FIRM. APPEAL BY MR THOMAS. (Reuter’s Telegrams.! LONDON, April 20. (Received June 21, 9.5 p.m.i Mr J. H. Thomas, secretary of the Rail-way-men’s Society, in a speech, said that the Irish railwaymen who intervirv.ed the Premier hat! decided that whatever the consequences might be they would not give way. if Ireland were running with blood next week, and if the military succeeded in exterminating - the railwaymen, there would still remain the Iri-h problem to be solved lie asked the Irish workers to realise the consequences of starting a light against the machine-guns of militarism. Trades unionists and the Government had national obligations.

The Conned believe that such propaganda postpones ■he settlement of Ireland's troubles, and that it is a menace to the public peace."
