MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The usual monthly meeting was held in the Council Chambers on Friday, when there were present: Messrs Horrell (chairman), S. Fowle, T. Flynn, F'. I.inscott, F. J. Dyer, T. A. Buckingham, W. J. A. McGregor, George Rodger and L. Cody. An application was made by Sutherland and Co., Ltd., Te Tua, lor the right to cart timber from Sheehan’s corner to Te Tua railway siding, and also to erect a lift on roarlline at Sheehan’s corner. —It was resolved that Sutherland and Co. be granted a license under the Tramways Act, 1908, for a tramway across and along Keenan’s Creek road, block IS, Longwood Survey District, as shown on plan deposited with the Council, for a term of 5 years from this date. The application was granted. R. Parsons, Orepuki, asked that 20 chains be gravelled from junction to Parson’s road, and stating he would contribute £8 to £lO on same.- Left to the member for the riding and the engineer. Henry V.’. Roberts and four others petitioned the Council to do something towards the Wakapatu-Round Hill road, as they were practically without an outlet.—-Left to the member for the titling and the engineer. John Hogan wrote stating that he would he unable to complete contract on Donkin and Burns’ road until spring, owing to the bad ruts on this road. He asked that it be held over until then. —Granted. Elizabeth C. Beer, Moss-burn, applied for a cutting on the roadline leading to her property at the south end of Mossburn township.—Matter to be attended to when surfaceman is in the district. The clerk, Stratford Borough Council, wrote asking the Council to endorse the following resolution with reference to the universal Saturday half-holiday ; —“That the Government be asked to take the necessary steps to make Saturday afternoon a universal half-holiday throughout the dominion.” —The letter was received. The town clerk. Hawera, forwarded a resolution asking the support of the Council, urging "the Government to immediately take the necessary steps for the removal of the duty on children's footwear.” —The letter was received.

James Murphy, County surfacemen, Orepuki, reported that the Railway Department at Tuatapere had allowed sewerage to collect against the main road, which in hot weather gave off an offensive smell, and several complaints had been received from residents regarding same. —Referred to the engineer to inspect and report. The local Deputy Public Trustee wrote asking that royalty on maintenance gravel for County contracts, taken from the estate of Allan J. Jack’s be paid.—Left in the hands of the engineer. The Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board reported four cases of diphtheria and three of influenza in the County.—Received. The rangers’ reports in the various ridings were received. ORDER PAPER. Councillor Rodger moved that- the following works be authorised in Pourakino riding:—Hodgett’s road, £IOO, £ for £, £SO. Councillor Flynn moved that the following be authorised in Otautau ridingSheddan’s road, £SO, £1 for £l, £SO; Beck and Taylor’s road, £IOO, £1 for £l, £IOO. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer reported:—Contracting work has now finished for the season, which has been a very successful one. —Regarding the application of Mr W. Saunders for a new road through his and Mr Buick’s properties, Cr. Buckingham and myself looked into the matter on the ground and there is no doubt a very much better and cheaper road than the present one could bo got, but Mr Buick will not agree to the roar! going through his property and therefore the matter is hung U p With the exception of the concrete culvert on the Gladfield road at Messrs Williams Bros.’, which is to he done next summer, and which has been temporarily repaired, the bridge gang has completed the rebuilding of the culverts and bridges in the Otautau riding, and will now as soon as repairs to plant are effected proceed to Avondale and remove the remains of the old stock bridge.
