SHIPPING CHARGES
HEAVY ADVANCES. SOME STARTLING FIGURES. Speaking at the provincial conference of the Farmers’ Union yesterday, Mr E. Bowmar gave some startling figures obtained by him at a recent conference in Wellington, showing the advances in shipping freights for produce since 1914.
It had been said, declared Mr Bowmar, tliat a ship making three trips between New Zealand and England paid for itself. Canada had paid for its fifty ships, and the conference knew the success that had attended the Australian Clovermnent’s venture. In this connection he held that the National Government had born backward. Mr Bowmar then quoted the following figures as showing the increases in the cost of shipping produce since 1914:—-
1014 1020 Beef (per lb) .... o-Hkl. 1 11-Hid. Mutton (per lb) .. 9-Kid. 1 13-Kid. Lamb (per lb) .... 11-Kid. 1 15-10(1. Cheese (per lb) .. .. Id. 1 Id. Butter (perewt) .. 2/li 5/4
Wool (per lb I .. .. 5-Sd. X 5-Sd. Tallow (per ton) .. £2 £9 15s. Dairy produce was once subject to a rebate of 5 per cent, now 5 per cent was added, continued Mr Bowmar and the general advance was equal to between 200 and 300 per cent. It, now cost something like £5 12/6 to remove an 8001b bullock.
