OHAI RAILWAY BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING, The monthly meeting of the Ohai Railway Board was attended by Messrs A. W. Rodger (chairman), I>. D. Macdonald, James King, W. Excell, and W. Crawford. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs W. J. A. McGregor and D. Jardine. The chairman reported the purchase of Mr J. M. Griffin’s block of land in Morley Village. The long standing dispute between the Board and the Soutliland and Otago Co-operative Timber Company relative to a contract for sleepers had been mutually settled on a satisfactory basis to both parties, and trade relations resumed. The Board’s agreement with the Black Diamond Coal Company had been completed by the Board’s solicitor, and subject to some modi fications urged by the company’s legal advisers, and which the Board could not agree to, being waived, the agreement, would be executed immediately.—Report received. Mr Tinker, secretary of the Black Diamond Coal Company, waited on the Board and mutually agreed to the completion of the agreement as drafted by the Board's solicitor. Mr Tinker asked the Board’s assistance towards his company getting Remission to export coal over the Ohai line prior to its completion. They required to get rid of coal to help their development work, and the Board could save them a good deal of cartage.
Resolved that the chairman endeavour to arrange with the Railway Department for right to load a limited number of trucks and work same with the ballast train presently working on the line.
The engineer reported that plate-laying on the main line was finished to within ten chains of Tinker’s Siding terminus, and that points and crossings were on order for various sidings. He recommended that owing to the extreme difficulty of obtaining a sufficient supply of red birch sleepers immediately, some of the sidings be pmt down with less durable sleejxtrs, more easily obtained, meantime. —In view of this report, the engineer was directed to obtain a supply of be-1 quality sleepers, procurable at once.
The C'oaldale Coal Company intimated their desire to have their siding put in at onre anil asked on what condition the Board would carry out the work.—lt was decided that the company receive the same treatment ns other coal owners, the Board to carry out the work on the company’s account at actual cost of labour and material used, with 6 per cent, interest for any time the Board is out of the money, The tender of Hogg and Co., Ltd., for IS Oregon gates at £2 10s each was accepted. The manager reported a new wafer service pipe had been put in, that a gravitation water service had been secured at Mossbank, and that extra accommodation was urgently wanted at Wairio, and sleepers on the original line required renewing in places. The engineer was instructed to treat as an urgent matter the laying down of an extra loop-line in Wairio yards, and proceed with the work at once, also to put two sets points and crossings in as soon as practicable to facilitate working in present siding. Payments to the amount of £6O for overtime work, recommended by the manager, was passed to various employees. The manager’s action in appointing an additional engine driver, fireman and guard was approved. , , G. Brighton complained that the present running of the train was responsible for three of his sheep being killed, and claimed £4 The letter was referred to the raanS. Flynn applied for access to his property. —The engineer reported that the matter'had been attended to. Mr Stevenson applied for improvements to road leading to Mossbank terminus to permit of coal carting—Referred to Wallace County Council.
