Mr J. T. N. James, formerly telegraphist at Reefton, took up duty on the local telegraph staff some days ago. Mr T. O’Byrne, who has been visiting sawmills in the Gatlins district, returned to town last night. A verdict of wilful murder was returned against Greenwood. A large crowd boohed him when he was arrested. A London cable to a Sydney paper states that Miss Dorothea Low, sister of Mr David Low, the cartoonist, has been married to Don Pedro Vargas, of the Republic of Columbia. Mr J. H. Gilbertson tendered his resignation as secretary to the Southland Rugby Union, which was accepted with regret. Mr W. G. Compton was appointed to fill the vacancy. Mr George Macnamara, who has been acting as chief inspector of Post Offices, ha* hec n appointed Second Assistant Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, in succession to Mr G. B. Dali, retired, says a Wellington Pros Association telegram. The recent ballot for the election of officers of the New Zealand Miners’ Federation resulted;— President, Mr Peter O’Rourke (Runanga); vice-president, Mr James McBride (Dennistoni; secretary-treasurer, Mr John Arbucitle (Wellington); South Island Executive member, Mr W. Braidwood (Kaitaugata). The folowing officers were elected for the ensuing year by the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Ofii cers’ Association conference yesterday ;- President, Mr J. H. McKenzie (Hastings) ; executive committee, North Island; Mesrs H. H. Brown (Wanganui), M. Cummins ( Wellington I, R. K. Hooper South Island: Messrs C. E. Collins (Tophouse), L. L. Hills (Hokitika), S. J. Goad (Nelson J, and G. Burrowes (Invercargill). General Booth was accorded a civic welcome at, the Wellington Town Hall yesterday (says a Press Association telegram). There was a Aery' large assemblage, and speeches of welcome made by the Mayor (Mr Luke), the Hon. G. J. Anderson (on behalf of the Government, in the absence of Mr Massey), the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), Archdeacon Johnson (on behalf oi Bishop Sprott,’, and for the Council ok Chu relies.
