ON THE TRAILER

THE COST OF COURTESY. In the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court on Friday M. Robinson was charged that he had persisted in remaining standing upon the roof of a tram-car after being requested by the conductor not to do so. Mr J. H. Upham, who appeared for the complainant, the Christchurch Tramway Board, said that the offence had occurred on a tram trailer while coming into the city from the races, on April 29. The defendant said that he did not know that it was an offence to stand up on top of a trailer. Mr G. V. Day, S.M.; There is certainly a danger when the cars are passing under wires. The Defendant; But I stood up to give my seat to a lady. Mr Day: Well, I suppose this is a penalty for being polite. Mr Upham; Of course, there were other people standing up. Mr Day said he would convict the defendant and order him to pay costs. Under the special circumstances he would not inflict a fine.
