TOWN COUNCIL

. FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Town Council was held last night, there being present : Councillors J. F. Lillicrap, A. H. Mackrell, J. Stevenson, J. A. Doig, E, Sheehan, F. W, Freddy, S. McDonald, J. Malheson, J. Martin, J. Miller and J. T. Carswell . In the absence of the Mayor (Mr John Stead) at another meeting, Councillor Lillicrap was voted to the chair until his Worship arrived. W. Hodgkins forwarded a number of suggestions for the beautification of Thomson street.—Cr. Lillicrap said that the committee might take the view that the people of some localities might be prepared to be rated in order to have their streets beautified.—Referred to the Works Committee.

R. J. Murdoch claimed compensation for injuries to a horse caused through the animal’s falling into a pit dug by tbe corporation staff. —Referred to the Works Committee.

Nineteen taxi-drivers petitioned against the Council’s decision not to issue licences to taxi-cab drivers under 21 years of age. In connection with a matter directly related, the Southland Times Company wrote asking that a license should be granted to James Melvin, who had held one for about three years. Melvin was, it was explained, one of two drivers who knew the Times run to Otautau well, having the knowledge where to leave papers for customers. Councillor Stevenson moved that the writers be informed that the Council’s resolution stood. He was convinced that the Council at the time it passed the resolution had perpetrated a hardship unwittingly, but, when a case was recommended for special consideration by him it had been decided to stand by the resolution. Councillor Sheehan seconded the motion. He said that Cr. Stevenson had voiced what was also his position, hlesh should not be made of one and fish of another. Cr. Carswell said that it was ridiculous to refuse a license to Melvin and to the lad Ryan who had applied previously.

The motion was carried, Councillors Freddy, Mackrell and Carswell opposing it. The secretary of the Northend Bowling Club applied for an extension of sixteen feet on the east side of its green in order to provide more seating accommodation. The club had spent over £IOOO on buildings, etc. —Referred to the Reserves Committee.
