SOUTH INVERCARGILL MEMORIAL.
To the Editor, Sir, —In reply to “A Digger with a Memory” 1 wish to state that I think he is labouring under a misapprehension regarding the Council deciding to erect the hall. The position is as follows:—Some nine months ago Mr P. Bain and Hie writer, recognising that the time had arrived when something definite should be done toward erecting a suitable memorial to all those who left this borough to fight for King, country and liberty, approached the Mayor and asked him to call a public meeting to discuss the question. This was done. Several meetings were held ar*i different suggestions made, finally those present at a public meeting decided that the memorial take the form of a hall, to contain a reading room and also council offices, such hall to have suitable tablets erected in the vestibule or other prominent place containing the names of all who went to the war from this part, special stress being laid on this point. The council was requested to take a poll on the matter, which request they have acceded to and it now rests with the ratepayers to sanction it or otherwise. I consider that the gentlemen constituting our council, who devote their time and energy to the advancement of the borough should not be subjected to such inuendos as appear in the above mentioned letter. I would suggest that any future correspondence on this matter should bear the writers’ signatures, not nom-de-plumes. —I am, etc., WM. BRIDGES. South Invercargill, June 11.
