Later details of the death of General Ravenshaw show that the party were visiting the camp of Major Pretorius, the renowned elephant-hunter. They went for a walk, being armed but not intending to shoot, and unexpectedly encountered a herd of elephants and went in hot pursuit. The others outstripped General Ravenshaw, who was found to be missing when the party returned. Native trackers after a long search discovered General Raveushaw’s body in tangled bush face downward. He was still grasping his rifle. Major-General Hurdis Sccundus Lalande Ravenshaw was 51 years'of age. He saw service in Indian frontier campaigns and the South African War, and in the European War, at the outbreak of which he was commanding the Connaught Rangers.
