PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
THE REPUBLICAN* NOMINATIONS. SENATOR JOHNSON THE FAVOURITE. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Reuter's Telegrams.) NEW YORK, June S. Senator Hiram Johnson continues to be the favourite Republican nomination for the Presidency. The other possibilities include Mr Charles Evan Hughes, General Leonard Wood, Governor Loaden, of Illinois; Senator Knox, Senator Poindexter, Mr Butler and Senator Harding. The Democrats will hold a Convention at San Francisco. Mr McAdoo is an undeniable favourite, though Mr Hoover may prove a dark horse. REPUBLICAN CONVENTION OPENED. DELEGATES AT A LOSS. ABSENCE OF PARTY BOSSES. NEW YORK, June S. (Received June 9, 7.30 p.m.) The Republican National Convention for the selection of a Presidential candidate opened at Chicago in unique circumstances, in that it is impossible to indicate who is likely to be chosen. Senator Johnson, Governor Lowden, and General Wood are probables. Owing to the absence of party bosses, which is due to a desire to place unrestricted power in the delegates’ hands to select their own nominees, the Convention is apparently at a complete loss to make a selection. Senator Lodge, the chairman, was loudly applauded when he criticised President Wilson for proceeding to the Peace Conference because he was unable to trust any one else. Senator T/odge denounced the Armenian mandate and the Government’s futile policy towards Mexico.
