SIR WILLIAM BIRDWOOD
CIVIC WELCOME AT CHRISTCHURCH. ADDRESS AT CHRIST'S COLLEGE. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 5. General Sir Wnbam Birdwood was accorded a chic reception in the Theatre Royal to-day. A very large gathering was pn-eni and the proceedings were enthusi-a.-tie. dins afternoon Sir William Birdwood visited Christ's College, where he met with a line reception. Later oil he visited the Chalmers Military Ward at the Hospital. Addressing the boys at Christ’s College, Sir William Birdwood urged them to stick to the traditions that had been formed by their fathers, uncles, and brothers in the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, and to remember that the qualities of comradeship, loyalty, and initiative which had meant so much on Gallipoli would carry them through life. The future of the nation, he said, depended on the maintenance of a high morale. Let: them make up their minds that they would never allow what was happening 'in Russia to take place ia their own country. When the time came for them to leave school they should go oa plaving in teams as they played at school, n-menibering the of Winchester College, “Manners make the man,” and doing their best to help a lame dog over tha stile.
