CANTERBURY MARKETS. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 8. Oats are held tinniy, and farmers allow no disposition to sell under the rates ruling for some time past. Auckland has much forward business to cover, and apparently northern merchants have been marking time awaiting weak sellers. The latter do not appear to be materialising, and probably towards the end of the month there will be a movement from the north to meet immediate deliveries. Chaff is (irmly held, and the shipping available is clearing up merchants’ holdings rather than stimulating the market. Potatoes are about on a par with last i week, being scarcely so firm if anything. A : good deal of pitting is going on. Auckland I : .-ports ample supplies last week, and also : that some signs of blight had shown in I southern potatoes, a fact which would prob--1 ably prevent the Australian embargo being lifted. Merchants here think that if such is the ease it is negligible as the crops are exceptionally clean this year. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 8. The Department of Agriculture has rej ceivcd the following cablegrams, dated June | 2 and 5 respectively, from the High Com|mLsioner for New Zealand:—The thirteenth ; series of Government wool sales commenced on Monday afternoon. There was a fair attendance of buyers, but competition was hesitating, with an unsatisfactory demand, i It had been decided to restrict the length of ' this scries to a fortnight. Compared with j closing rates of last series prices were lower |—-Merinos, 15 per cent, to 20 per cent.; j bite crossbreds, 10 per cent, to 15 per cent.; ! medium, 50 per cent. Coarse wool was not i represented. So far 150,000 bales of shorn ; wools are available for the series, 34,500 jof which are New Zealand. Crossbreds are i selling slowly. The Government limit is too ] high in many cases for New Zealand crossbreds, and a large proportion was withdrawn, as buyers can purchase a similar description of free Argentine at relatively lower prices. Putter.—-There is no change in price for Government butter. English butter is plentiful and .selling steadily at an average price of 2/101 per lb. Irish supplies are increasing. and the demand is good. Creamery, 211 to 214 IS/S per cwt. Cheese.—Supplies tire increasing, with fair inquiry for English at 1/7 to 1/0. The Canadian market is easier. Current quotations, c.i.f., are £S 1/- to £8 3/- per cwt, but the price is considered too high by the trade for large buying. The New Zealand lock on Juno 4 was 2083 crates, as against ■13.120 at this time last year. Money.—The demand is improving and prices tire Tinner. At this week’s public sdc New Zealand “B”’ grade brought 95/I per cwt, and “C” grade 85/-. I I Temp.—-The Manila market is dull and jd( •••hmi'g. grade Fehrtiary-April to !
