(Special to the Timet). DUNEDIN, June 5.
When the race trains commenced to drawout in quick order for Wingatui the sky was overcast, but the sun struggled through the clouds later and the afternoon turned out £ne, although it was cold about three o ciock, with a chilly penetrating breeze in evidence. There was a very satisfactory attendance and speculation was always brisk A large amount of money was shut out of the totali.sator on the majority of the races, but this was practically caused by the public delaying their investments until a few minutes prior to the closing of the machine. The racing was very interesting throughout, but the public had a disastrous afternoon, substantial dividends being the order of the day. Southland-owned horses won five races and also secured place money in instances, their share for the day being £1438 10s, the total for the three days of the meeting being £3851, Judging from the attendance and investment figures, the metropolitan club must have experienced » good meeting and it is thus safe to say that there will be no curtailment of the number of racing days for the next June gathering, as some faint-hearted people were suggesting when matters did not work out •xactly as expected on the opening day, when the weather was against success and there was no holiday to suit residents of the adjacent city. The only unsatisfactoryhappening of the day was the fact that the crack cross-country horse. Master Strowan, fell at the first fence of the Dunedin Steeplechase, being evidently blinded by the horses running in front of him to the taking off spot. A number of the public had gathered Specially to see the North Islander perform »nd they were naturally disappointed to witness him fail so early in the race, his (all being probably the first of his career in a race.
The sun broke through the clouds as the field lined up for the Greenfield Hurdles and a fine afternoon appeared in orospect After a good start King Star hit the first fence hard and Strayshot and Golden Prince drew to the front. At the stand fence Strayshot struck heavily, but soon recovered her position in front alongside-Golden Prince, the pair being well clear of the others, with Wild Pilgrim next, and Calma away in the rear. At the six furlong hurdles Jack Symons got a bump and fell Bounding the far turn the leaders were still well clear, while Awahou moved into third place, and, continuing his run, ranged up with Strayshot and Golden Prince climbing the hill. At the obstacle near the water jump Spyglass fell, Hagerty being unhurt. Awahou was in front to the home bend, with Achilleus coming fast and Calma making a good run. In the straight Awahou ran up the last fence and interfered somewhat with Wild Pilgrim. On the flat Achilleus, by Achilles—Dexterity (T. O’ConBelli more than held his own to beat Calma (Robinson i by three lengths, with Awahou two lengths off third, just in front of W'ild Pilgrim, while Strayshot was fifth. The winner, who is trained by J. Kelly at Riversdale, returned a price in the vicinity of half a century. In his schooling work Achilleus jumped very badly, but made a good showing in the actual race. The field comprised—Golden Prince, CalBia, King Star, Strayshot, Wild Pilgrim, Jack Symons, Spyglass, Achilleus, Awahou. J. R. Kaan was severely shaken when Jack Symons fell.
When the field reached the five furlong post in ' the Taieri Handicap Sartolite was in front from Barley Rigs, but the latter moved up at the hill followed by Carmine and Mettle Drift, while Bengeroop was apparently shut in. Sartolite dropped out running to the £urn. When heads were turned for home Mettle Drift ran to the front from a bunch. Inside the distance Bengeroop and Chaeronia came fast followed by Black Mountain and Lady Pallas. An exciting finish resulted in Mr H. Woodley's Bengeroop, by Calibre —Alumini (W. Robinson) winning by nearly a length from Chaeronia (S. Walls), who beat Black Mountain (R. C. Reed) by a neck, while Lady Pallas was a head off fourth, followed by Mettle Drift. The field comprised—Bondage, Black Mountain, Bengeroop, Marching Order, Lady Pallas, Carmine, Mettle Drift, Barley Rigs, Chaeronia, Blue Admiral, Mazama, Sartolite, Breton.
From a pood start in the King George Handicap Sedd-el-Bahr and Radial were soon prominent, but Clean Sweep took up the running at the six furlong post from Almoner, Sedd-el-Bahr and Radial, while Jock was a long way off. At the far turn Clean Sweep was still in command, but Sedd-el-Bahr did well going up the hill and was clear before the home bend was reached. Turning into the straight Sedd-el-Bahr held a five lengths lead, but ran out to the far side of the track and Radial and Eleus got through on the rails and drew away. In the run home Radial, by' All Red—Aerina (H. Young) drew out to win comfortably by about three lengths from Eleus (G. Young), with Sedd-el-Bahr (R. J. Mackie) eight lengths away third, followed close up by Miss Camouflage, Samiel, Jock and Clean Sweep in a bunch. Had Sedd-el-Bahr not bored out he would have troubled the winner.
The field comprised—Radial, Hot Air, Eleus, Jock, Clean Sweep, Royal Star, Miss Camouflage, Sedd-el-Bahr, Melee, Kilkee, Almoner, Samiel.
At the first fence in the Dunedin Steeplechase Master Strowan struck heavily and fell. Diavolo soon ran to the front from Crib and San Sebastian. At the post and rails San Sebastian joined Diavolo, with Crib six lengths away. Here Whipcord (J. Weir) ran off. Crib jumped to the front at the water from San Sebastian and the pair led Diavolo, with Black Sea some distance away. After racing through the straight and crossing the sod wall safely, Crib and San Sebastian drew away from Diavolo, while Black Sea commenced to make up some- ground. Down the back stretch Crib was easily holding his own from San Sebastian, who fell at the same post and rails obstacle which proved fatal to many horses at the meeting. Being left on his own, Mr J. Smith’s Crib, by Sant Ilario—Cryde (J. R. Kaan) cantered home an easy winner by over one hundred and fifty yards from Black Sea (T. O’Connell), who passed Diavolo (J. McChesney) in the run home and beat him by fifty yards, then came Stone Ginger a long way off.
The field comprised—Master Strowan, San Sebastian, Diavolo, Crib, Whipcord, Black Sea, Stone Ginger.
When the Empire Handicap field found their legs Murihiku was showing out from Eight Bells and Mortham. with Kilbrogan, who got away badly, well in the rear. Racing to the home turn Pyjama, Eight Bells and Mortham were in front, with Silver Peak coming fast. In the straight Silver Peak, by Adjudge—Oblong (G. \oung) quickly ran to the front and won easily by two lengths from Mortham (T. Humphries) who beat Eight Bells by half a length for second place, with Revolution next, followed by Pyjama. The field comprised—Silver Peak, Eight Bells, Pyjama, Murihiku, Killowen, Mortham, Sleepyhead, Revolution.
Glenisla lost ground at the start for the Third Hack Steeplechase, owing to somebody on foot getting in his way. Luigi led into the course proper and showed the way over the water to Dunmure and Kintailshore. Luigi was followed at the grandstand double by Kintailshore and Dunmure, Magdala making a bad jump. At the post and rails on the hillside Kintailshore fell Racing up the back Magdala moved up to Dunmure. buj fell at the fatal post and rails. Luigi (L. Hagerty) jumped the water well and was first into the straight, but on the flat Mr T. Kett’s Dunmure, by Glen•.qip~Rpmorse (J. McChesney) came fast and in a good finish won by less than a length, Luigi beating Grafton Tot (11. Vorrath) by four lengths for second place, Glenisla was fourth. Magdala was going very well when he toppled over.
The field comprised—Magdala, Kintail shore, Glenisla, Grafton Tot, Luigi, Dun mure, Gold Patch.
In the Doman Handicap Vice-Regal and Silent King led a bunched field, in which Freestone and Lady Pallas were showing out as the field ran up the hill. Silent King led into the straight, but at the distance Lady Pallas was in hot pursuit. In a very keen finish W. C. Harrison’s Lady Pallas, by Pallas— Kitty'O’Shea (A. E. Ellis) pot up to beat Silent King (C. Emmcrson) by a short neck, with The Boss (G. Pickens l four lengths away third, then came LadySuperior and Red Eagle. The field comprised—Killiney, Silent King. Orange Bitters, Martifors, Vice Re gal. Lady Pallas, Lady Superior, The Boss, Frenchman, Red Eagle, Freestone.
The large pool of £7813 was in the machine when the Farewell Handicap field left the barrier in fair line. Hot Air being one of the last to move, while Claverhouse got nicely away from the misbehaviour pen Primum gave some trouble, but was one of the' first to commence. Braid and Thistlecrown were showing the way at the far turn, with Primum handy. Before the straight was reached Primum had assumed command, while Don Pacifico, All Ready and Golden King were closing up fast. At the distance Primum (G. Young) was still in front, but lost his place a little further on when’ Don Pacifico, Golden King and All Ready ran past him. A fine tussle resulted in Mr J. Bunny’s Don Pacifico, by San Francisco—Windwhistle (R. McLellan) beating Golden King (W. Robinson) by a short neck, -with All Ready (H. Young) a similar distance away third, then came Linden, Primum, and' Claverhouse. The winner, who is trained by T. Stiven, junr., at Wingatui, returned a double-figure price.
