BRITISH GAS WORKERS. NATIONAL STRIKE THREATENED. (By Telegraph. —Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, June 4. The entire country is threatened with a gasworkcrs’ strike for higher wages. The ballot by an overwhelming majority favoured a stoppage of work on June 26.
AFFAIRS IN NEW ZEALAND. CHRISTCHURCH CLERKS’ DEMANDS. AN AGREEMENT REACHED. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 5. At the Conciliation Council the representatives of the recently formed Clerks, Cashiers, and Office Employees’ Union met representatives of the gas companies, freezing works companies, and agricultural implement makers. The following rates of pay were agreed toMales, first year, 20a per week; second, 255; third, 30s; fourth 40s; fifth 525; thereafter, 80s. Females: First year, 20s; second 255; third 30s; fourth, 35s ; thereafter 40s. Males over twenty-five years with five years’ experience, £4 4s; males with five years’ experience, 6s bonus; females with four years’ experience, ss; all others, 3s. Those employees who have passed the Matriculation or Senior Civil Service or Commercial Accountants’ examination, 5s extra. A 48 hour week was agreed to, no day’s work to be longer than nine hours.
