At the Supreme Court on Thursday, My Gordon J. Reed was admitted as a barrister by His Honour Mr Justice Sim. According to the New York Press Miss Nance O’Neill has made another of her volcanic successes in a Spanish play by Benaventc, entitled, "The Passion Flower.” Mr R. Waden, who has been absent from Invercargill for some time making landscape studies in the Lakes district, has returned. Mr A. L. Wylie of the Chief Post Office staff, Wellington, has been transferred to the position of postmaster at Lumsden, while Mr W. Jackson, postmaster at Lumsden, goes to a similar position at Edendale. * A Feilding Press Association telegram reports the death of Mr G. N. Shannon, formerly Government Customs expert, and a prominent settler in the Waituna district. His wife predeceased him by six years. Mr Shannon leaves a large grown-up family. Mr S. J. Taylor, of the Invercargill Telegraph staff, who had received notification of his transfer to Hawera, has now been advised that his destination will be Timoru, at which office Mr Taylor will fill the position of Telegraph Superintendent. A London Press Association cable states that . Mr Lloyd George, Mr Balfour, tue Speaker and numerous members of Parliament of all parties attended the wedding of Mr Bonar Law’s daughter to General Sir Frederick Sykes. The death occurred at the Auckland Hos pital yesterday, says a Press Association telegram, of Major George Melville Burlinson, late superintendent of the Weraros Training Farm, in his 66th year. Prior to going to Weraroa, Major Burlinson was at the Cavereham Industrial School, Dunedin. The death occurred early in May on his 96th birthday of Mr Levi Parsons Mortou, who was vice-president of the United States, under President Harrison (18S9 to 1893). Mr Morton was one of the big bankers of America, and at one time was United States Minister in France.

Mr A. R. Jordan, First Assistant Deputy Public Trustee, Christchurch, has been promoted to the position of District Inspector of the Department for the districts of Invercargill, Dunedin, and T.unaru, with headquarters at Dunedin, our Christchurch correspondent telegraphs. Our Christchurch tcr-espondont telegraphs:—Mr Robert Halchweli has retired from the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Mr Hatchwell joined the company in 1883, and during the whole period has been stationed in Lyttelton, latterly holding the position of local agent there. Mr Hatchwell will be succeeded by Mr R. W. Skipage, of the Company’s Bluff staff.

Captain Donald McLean, a veteran seaman with a remarkable record, is retiring from the service of the Union Steam Ship Company. Thirty-five yeais ago he joined the Red Funnel fleet, and of that period he has for 27 years been master. It was in 1885 that he joined the service as fourth officer of the then crack flier Rotomahana. In 1888 he was chief officer of the vessel. In a similar position he saw service in the steamers Pukaki, Penguin, Colac, Taviuni, and Arawata.' The varied experiences acquired in these vessels qualified him for promotion, and he was appointed master of th» Poherua. But *he captain also climbs, for experience imparts efficiency to ability. In succession to the initial command of the Poherua, Captain McLean bad charge of the Oreti, Maori, Taviuni, Moura. Upilu, Ovalau, Rotokino, Flora, Walker?, Monowai, Mokoia, Manapouri, Tarawera, Hauroto, Talune, Navua, Tofua, Maruka, Mahcno, Moeraki, Waihora, Waitemata and Niagara. During his varied career as commander, Captain McLean was the general favourite alike of passengers and crews. Captain McLean had distinguished war service, for he was master of the Mahen i during the whole period of her commission as an hospital ship.
