BOXING. VOLAIRE V. O’NEILL. (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 4. In a boxing contest to-night for a purse of £l5O, Eugene Volaire, the Frenchman, easily beat Frank O'Neill, the West Coaster. . Volaire established a good lead until the sixth round, when he sent the West Coaster to the boards three times in quick succession, the third time being for the full count. The fight was never interesting, owing to Volume's pronounced superiority. FOOTBALL. INTER-ISLAND MATCH. SOUTH ISLAND TEAM. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 4. The Canterbury Rugby Union have recommended the following local players for inclusion in the South Island team to play the North Island: —C. Evans, full-back; W. Ford, W. Thompson, three-quarters; D. Sandman, half-back; D. McCormick, fiveeighths; A. Henry*, E. Cummings, L. Peterson, E. liasell, forwards; W. Carnegie, wing forward. HOCKEY. LADIES’ ASSOCIATION. The fortnightly meeting of the Southland Ladies' Hockey Association last evening was attended by Messrs A. Macgregor (chairman) and K. Richards, and Misses E. Stout, G. Taylor, J. Coutts, H. Ashley, L. Lawson, C. Walker, and L. Wilson. A delegate stated that she had received an inquiry from the Dunedin GirLs’ College team asking if it- would be possible for the Southland Association to arrange for a match with the College team to be played in Invercargill early in July. It was decided to accept the offer of a match with the Dunedin team, and the secretary* was instructed to arrange a definite (late. The matter of arranging for a local team was left to the selectors. Miss McClure was appointed Southland’s vice-president on the New Zealand Ladies’ Ilockcv Association.
It was decided that the secretary, on behalf of the Southland Ladies’ Hockey Association, should communicate with the School Sports’ Association protesting against the delay in commencing the schools’ hockey fixtures, and ask for definite information in regard to the objects of the Association and the relation of the Southland Ladies’ Hockey Association to schools’ hockev. FIXTURES. It was decided to commence the junior fixtures on Thursday next, and the matches were arranged as follows: High A. v. Melrose. College A v. College G. High B v. College B. SENIOR GRADE.
