The King, Queen end Princess Mary went to Epsom in a special train with fifty specially invited guests. They had a great reception on the racecourse. It is estimated that a quarter of a million people were present.

The human fide began to flow towards Epsom in the early hours of the morning. At dawn there were hundreds of camp fires on the Downs, where ten thousand people spent the night in the open. The weather was gloriously sunny and thousands trudged the fifteen miles from London, while the various railway termini were filled with surging crowds. About one in 20 of every vehicle going to Epsom was horse-drawn. The road presented a wonderful sight for what is regarded as one of the greatest days in turf history. Fully half a million bottles of beer and thousands of pounds of meat and tons of ham and other food supplies were requisitioned for the catering booths. On the morning of (he race the Daily Express stated that Earl Wilton, who is the hero of many sensational plunges on the turf, had scratched all his horses, including his Derby candidate. He also cancelled arrangements for a large private luncheon party. Earl Wilton succeeded to the title when a midshipman on the Queen Mary.
