POLICE COURT
FITTING AT RIVERTON. A sitting of the Police Court was field at Riverton yesterday before Mr O. Cruick-.-Jiank, S.M. BY-LAW CASES. Charged with allowing a cow to wander in a public street, Sarah Allison pleaded guilty by letter and was fined 5s without costs. Nellie Beer, similarly charged, was convicted and lined 10s, with costs 7s. OBSCENE LANGUAGE CHARGE.. Alexander Perrier, junior, was charged with using obscene language to John Leary, blacksmith, of Riverton, in the Carriers’ Ann-.- Hotel on May 22. Mr Hunter appeared for the informant and Mr H. Maealirter for the defendant. Mr Macalistcr stated that it appeared that the trouble had arisen in the bar, and while it was not admitted that the words set out in the information were used by the defendant, he had advised his client to agree to he bound over to keep tile peace and Mr limiter had agreed to that course being adopted. Mr Hunter agreed that this would be the most satisfactory course for his client. When the language was used in the bar the liefeuiian; was slightly under the influence of liquor and was perhaps not morally responsible for the language used. He thought that if Perrier was bound over the benefit to the informant would he more lasting.
The Magistrate convicted defendant and ordered him to find a surety of £SO to keep the peace for twelve months towards the informant. He was also ordered to pay costs amounting to £1 LSs.
