REV. HECTOR MACLEAN
CALL TO ST. ANDREW’S, DUNEDIN.
(Special to the Times.}
DUNEDIN, June 2. At a largely attended congregational meeting of St. Andrew’s Church last night, telegraphs our Dunedin correspondent, it was unanimously decided to give a call to Ihe Kev. Hector Maclean, of Knox Church, Invercargill. When Dr Waddell resigned last year, Mr Maclean was approached, but he would not consent to his name being submitted. It, will be remembered that Mr Maclean was an applicant for the Old Testament Chair at the last meeting of the Fresbyteriun Assembly, and despite the fact that he was recommended by the selection committee of Scotland and the committee appointed by the Fresbyterian Church of New Zealand, his application was turned clown by a narrow majority. The result of the Assembly’s deck-ton wa- th.i subject of a good deal of controversy, and the Dunedin representatives made no secret that Mr Maclean would soon receive a rail to a larger church, where his great abilities would be of more benefit to the students studying for the ministry. It is understood that Mr Maclean was approached by another Dunedin congregation early in the year, but h# absolutely refused to allow his name to ba submitted. It is believed that -Mr Maclean will give this call deep consideration, coming from a congregation which as a whole has never heard him preach.
