The "inner of the Trial Hurdles, .lack Symons, on the opening day of the current D..1.C. Winter meeting, now carries 10.9 (including Pllb penalty) in the valuable Otago Hurdle Handicap this afternoon. Crib was looking well when he went out to eontest the Otago Steeplechase on Tuesday and was going well when he missed a fence at. the double in front of the grandstand, hence he may have a chance over the smaller jump- today with 10.9. King Star 19.0 1 ran forward enough in the Trial Hurdles to hold an out-ide chance in the Otago Hurdles, but All Talk tHl.ll) and Gaylight (11.-D are still held to have verybright prospect-. King Sie.r. on Tuesday's running, should gather in some money in the near future at the hurdle-racing business. j The smart Southland; owned pacer Royal | Step i.- now an inmate of the establishment pre-ided over by I-. E. Jones in South Canterbury. J. The pair drew away from the field at the finish, and although Bengeroop swerved , >ut under pressure inside tile distance, he came on attain to win cleverly in most determined fashion. I’. T. lliumii’' pupil is a sturdy, tine-looking gelding and may develop into a. very useful racehorse. He is well bred, as he is a son of Calibre and Alumini (dam of Canada, Gold Coin, Hardshot, etc.', by Patron (sou of Grand Flaneur i from Agate, by Newmaster —Cornelian. I. G. Tdson rode an excellent race on the descendant of Calibre.

It is a remarkable fact (writes "Sentinel'' in Otago Witness’ that the N.Z. Grand National winner, Lochella, has never raced over the Wingatui country, which is laid out on the course on which, ho lias been trained for the past two or three years.

A North Island trainer at present at Win- j gaud holds stnui;; objection to the Tst mini- j inum, because it ivouM mum an increase of J weight, ami hence doubly detrimental to ] horses racing on hard tracks in the north.

Mr R. L. Bey?, part owner of Palladio, Is on a visit from the North Island to see the steeplechaser and Martifors perform at the Dunedin J.C. Winter fixture. The latest from America is the transport of horses by aeroplane. A horse was recently lak-ai by aeroplane from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, where it was to be exhibited at. a horse show. Prior to sending the horse the officers of the Humane Society had to be convinced that no cruelty was involved in tb.e trip, which was made in an especially equipped aeroplane.

The winenr of the Birthday Handicap at Wingami on Tuesday, Jock, was bred by Hr R. Miller, of Oreti Plains, who took up the breeding industry on a modest scale on the death of his brother, Mr J. Miller, whose stud gave to the turf Magdala, Daringdale, Cannonade, Giralda, Magdalen and other winners. Jock, by the way is a well-bred horse by C.leneulloch (Clanrauald—Madowla i from Follicle, by Casket -—Parvuia, by Apremont—Puriki. A half-brother to Jock, in Cannonade, by Canrohert, was a useful galloper but did not last very long on the turf. The second day's programme includes a gold cup and a purse of £201)0, and in three other events the prizes are £IOOO each.

1-Jeus is very wed at present and may run a good race in the Provincial Handicap (one mile and a quarter) at W’ingatui to-day under 5.13. but he will find Thaddeus, Almoner and Melee hard to dLqsJse of in the deep going. It has also to be remembered that Elcu.s is not too sound just now.

The waterside workers at fust refused to handle the stallion. and it was not until Mr McDonnell gave a guarantee that he was not travelling v.;th a v:ew to being raced that permission was given to ship the horse.

Judging from the way in which he war, shaping in the First Hack Steeplechase at V-'ingatni on Tuesday Golden Rupee would prvb ibly have been hard to beat, but for an unfortunate accident. At the sod wall cb.-tacle he threw his head up suddenly and struck McMullan on the mouth, with via- result that the clever southern horseman was dazed for the greater part of the journey and Golden Rupee dropped to the rs:;r. The son of General Average is looking well and has evidently come through a very sound preparation.

Ir is safe to say that very few crossj country jockeys would have stuck to Manawaponga in the Otago Steeplechase as L. Hagerty did. On each circlet the ungainly - act : oni'(l chestnut struck the post and rails at the far turn in a manner which would 1 have brought most s' ceplechasers to pea. s, i hut the All Black priding, assisted by Ins rider, kept on Ivs feet, and Hagerty stuck ,to the -addle like a leech. Hagerty was ' thoroughly deserving of the special cheer which greeted him on returning to weigh m | after the race. The Rice art on horseman, who keeps himself in perfect physical condif.on, ha; ipiite a number of similar perfi'rmauees to his credit and on a number . of occasions he has been enabled to win : races, owing to his pluck and ability to stay with horses given to clouting fence after i fence.
