DPNEDIX, June 1. With rain, hail anti snow in evidence in turn for some day# the prospects for the Opening day of the Dunedin J.C.’s Winter meeting did not look too bright, but worse was to come. Crowds of people from north and south poured into a damp city on Monday night, all train? being packed while many carried passengers on the platforms despite the chilly atmosphere prevailing. Writing without official data to go upon it looked as if the railway figures would constitute an easy record. In due course the Monday evening arrivals found quarters domehow and somewhere and then the rain came down again. All night long the moisture from overhead poured down, but there was a welcome break some hours after daylight broke on the scene. Although the day remained fine, with a threatening sky, the damage was done, and Dunedinites, for the most part, remained in their homes, or attended at their places of business, while many visitors refused to leave for distant Wingatui, and thus the attendance on the racecourse was well below the average of former years, this unsatisfactory state of affairs being the prelude to a decrease of many thousands of pounds in totalisator returns. However the great crowd of visitors arc grill handy to the scene of action, and, when the public holiday of Thursday cornea along, freeing townspeople for the day, the U.J.C. will have a good chance of making up leeway. It is hardly necessary to state that Southianders were in evidence on all sides when racing commenced out within sight of the manufacturing centre of Mosgiel, and they had good reason to rejoice when Bcngeroop, Jock, Silver Peak and Magdala in turn won races for the home province, while Tin Soldier, Zarkoma and Primum also gave gome return lor their support. During the afternoon Southland-owned horses accounted for £1615 in prize money, and it was noticed that there were many delighted people from Riverton and the Western District generally amongst the cheering crowd when Jock and Magdala found their way first past the post in the respective races—the success of Messrs Traill Bros.' gelding Jock in the principal fiat race of the meeting was received with marked tokens of approval. The most prolonged cheering of the day rose on the air, however, when Master Strowan, the "hero of a hundred fights” won the Otago Steeplechase in brilliant style, jumping like a stag throughout. The heavy going and the country troubled some of the other visitors from the north, but not so the winner of some of the best cross-country events in New Zealand. The North Islander, Mr V. B. Easton has had a good innings during the current season oa this side of Cook S-trait ttirn Arnythas and Master Strowan. The runner-up to Master Strowan, the Western District gelding Zarkoma, did well to get where he did, as he has practically broken down on more than one occasion during the past twelve months —trainer P. T. Hogan put in great work to get him to the post at all. let alone make the crack winner do his best to the distance.
There was considerable disappointment when the much discussed Ail Talk was withdrawn from the Trial Hurdle Race. From a rood start' Achilleus led to the first fence but ran up the obstacle. Tuticorn fell. Racing past the stand Golden Prince led from Glenspone and Jack Symons. Barrister here made a bad jump and dropped to the rear. When running to the back Glensponse made a faulty leap and lost ground. At the six furlong post fence Samiel (W. Griffiths; fell. Passing the five fur-
long mark Jack Symons and Golden Prince had drawn a dozen lengths clear of Calnm, St. Cletus and Strayshot. Jack Symons, by Handsome Jack—Lady Symons (L. Hagerty) fought out a good finish to win by a length from Golden Iwince ( F. Humphries', with Strayshot (W, Scobic) over two lengths away, then throe lengths off came King Star just in front of Ce.lmn (W. Rob’n.«vi i and M. (Tons (C Dawson l. Glen iponse nearly frit at the last jump. The field comprised- Culma, Jack Symon ; , Barrister, Samiel, Golden I nn.p, Tuticorn, King Stir, Glensponse, Strayshot. R. G. Jobm-on, rider oi Tuticorn, hiwl his right leg broken in two places biiow the knee when his mount fell with him. In the Brighton Handicap Kilmeedy was I ’r t to show our from Martifors, but Sdeiit King soon took up t!i° running from Mnrtifor< liniie Admiral and Checkmate. At the tar turn Silent King was still in front attended by Checkmate and Martuors, while Benge roo,. was coming from the bumm. Checkmate (T. L. Reiil' toiik commend racing to the turn and led into the straight but Bengeroop came fast at the distance, 'while Laoy Gallas, Blue Admiral end Silent King were munly. The leaders drew away, 11. Woodley's Bengeroop, by Calibre -Alumini (I. Tilson i boiting Checkmate by a short ncek, with Lady Pallas (A, Ellis) ten lengths away :hiri). then came Barley Rigs, Blue Admiral and Silent King. The field comprised—Silent King, Checkmate, Bine Admiral, Bengeroop, Barley Rigs, Killiney, Mettle Drift, Kilmeedy, Sartolite, Martifors, Cannie Jack. Lady F'allas, Black Mountain, Breton, Mazatna.
From a good start in the Birthday Handicap Kilnioon, Jock and Melee were first to show out. but Jock was in command from Melee passing the stand, with Btirran, gong bringing up the rear. Jock was always in front all the way down the back from Melee, but Tin Soldier made a forward move as the field climbed the hill. Jock was first to the home turn, with Tin Soldier almost on terms with Meloe. In the run home Tin Soldier (J. Andrews) challenged stoutly but Mersra T, and F. Traill’s bay gelding Jock, by Glenculloch—Follicle (A. E. Ellis' won easily by two lengths, Tin Soldier beating Melee by a similar distanre, with Almoner fourth (close up) followed by Nightraider and Bondage. The field comprised—Nightraider, Jock,
Kilmoon, Almoner, Tin Soldier, Burrangong, Bondage, Melee.
The field left iu line in the Otago Steeple chase, the first to become prominent being Palladio and Black Sea. At, the sod wall Kintailshore fell. Down the hack stretch Palladio, Black Sea. Crib and Manawaponga were in order, while Master Strowan was a long way off. Manawaponga was in front to the post and rails where he struck heavily and lost ground, enabling Black Sea to take command with Palladio third and Grib and Master Strowan closing up fast. At the brush at the top of the straight Black Sea (T. O’Connell) unshipped her rider. At the stand double Master Strowan had caught Manawaponga, while Palladio was feeling the effects of the pace. At this stage Zarkoma came into the picture, while Crib ran off and was pulled up. There was no change to the back, except that Nocturnal (11. Vorrath) lost his rider at the post and rails on the hill. Master Strowan was in front from Manawaponga, who again hit the post and rails, at the far turn, very heavily and Hagerty made a great recovery. Zarkoma was in second place at the water and got within a few lengths of the favourite at the last fence. On the flat Mr F. S. Easton’s Master Strowan, by Strowan —The Artist mare (H. Lorigan I soon disposed of Zarkoma (\V. Robinson) and beat him by six lengths, with Manawaponga fifteen lengths away third, four lengths ahead of Palladio. The winner, who made light of his weight and the heavy going, was treated to an outburst of cheering on returning to the birdcage. W. Robinson rode a tine race on Zarkoma, but the Southland gelding mot more than his match in the ex-Grand National winner. The time was good for the state of the going. The field comprised Master Strowan, Manawaponga, Crib, Zarkoma, Palladio, Black Sc a, Kintailshore, Nocturnal.
There was some delay at the post for the Tradesmen'* Handicap and Kilkee was finally put in the outlaw's pen. From a somewhat indifferent start Killowen and Pyjama were prominent, and then Mortham and Sleepyhead made the run nine from Kiilowen, Eight Bells and Silver Peak, while Radial was close up. At the home turn Silver Peak was almost on terms with Mortham and Sleepyhead, while Radial was coming fast. Silver Peak was first to pass the distance (on the fencel, but Radial (in the centre of the track) challenged. The leaders drew away, Mr W. Stone’s Silver Peak, by Adjudge—Oblong (G. Young) winning by a long neck from Radial (H. Young I, with Eight Bells (A. E. Ellis) six lengths off third, then came Hot Air, Mortham and Sleepyhead. One of the last to leave the mark was Hot Air, who finisher! close up fourth. The field comprised—Killowen, Silver Peak. Eight Bells, Tnrfreda, Mnrthnm, Sleepyhead, Kllkcc, Hot Air, Radial, Pyjama.
When the field for the Find Hack Steeplechase reached the water jump Blazcaway and Frog held command, with Glenisla tailing the bunch. Dunmure fell at the wafer. Frog ran to the front and led through the straight, Blazcaway running round at the stand double. Grafton Tot momentarily took charge at the sod wail, but 1 rog was soon in front again closely attended by Grafton Tot and Magdala, with Glenisla closing up. Frog was joined by Magdala and Grafton Tot at the water. Racing to the turn Frog was beaten and Glenisla closed on the leaders. In the straight J. Beck's Magdala, by Comedian —Minaret (C. Dawson) held on in a good finish to win by a length from Grafton Tot (H. \ orrath), with Glenisla (Mr E. J. Ellis) a similar distance away third, then came Frog, Golden Rupee and Silver Top at intervals. Golden Rupee was going well when he bumped hia rider in the face with his head and A. McMullen completed the course in a dazed state. The winner will be remembered as the winner of the Winter Cup eight years back. The field comprised—Grafton Tot, Magdala, Glenisla, Golden Rupee, Blazcaway, Dunmure, Silver Top, Frog.
Wild Pilgrim made the early running in the Jumpers’ Flat Race from Lady Penza and Hanlshot. At the far turn Hylans ran to the front from Hardshot and All lalk. Running to the home turn Spyglass and Whipcord came from a long way back and joined the bunch behind the leader. Mr P. Delargey's Hylans, by Hyrnettus—Temerity (T. Humphries) held his own and won easily by three lengths from Whipcord (T. Ruthven) with Spyglass six lengths off third, half a length in front of All Talk, while Wiki Pilgrim was some distance away next.
The field comprised —All Talk, Gaylight, Lady Penza, Spyglass, Hylans, Wild Pilgrim, Awahou, Hardshot, Whipcord.
Golden King was one of the last to leave the mark in the Winter Welter Handicap, while Miss Camouflage and Clean Sweep were soon showing the way. At the foot of the lull Clean Sweep was in charge, while Primum was moving up fast, and All Ready and Marching Order were handy. Primum (G. Young) was in front below the distance, but was tackled a little further on by R. McKay’s All Ready, by All Red—Aerina (H. Young), the latter winning by half a length, with Clean Sweep (J. Campbell) four lengths off third, Marianne was fourth, and Golden King next.
The field comprised- —Clean Sweep, Primuni, Don PaciHco, All Ready, Thistlecrown, Marianne, Mias Camouflage, Thaddeus, Golden King, Marching Order and Gunrest.
It appears that when Dunmure came to grief in the Hack Steeplechase that he did not see the jump, being blinded by the horses in front of him. He struck the fence with his chest, the result being that J. McChesney received an involuntary bath, being spilled into the middle of the ice-cold water.
The totalisator return* for the day showed a decrease of £9334 10-, as compared with those of the opening' day of last season, when very line weather was experienced. BOXIMG. EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS.
