SMALLPOX

SEVERAL CASES IN OTAGO. IFer United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, May 29. Two fresh cares of smallpox were notified from Invercargill yesterday. It is stated that there are undoubtedly In Dunedin a few eases of what is authoritatively declared to be American smallpox. There is rea-on to believe that many other cares exist of a distinctly mild nature. The known cases in Otago are the subject of special and constant study and attention. A CLEAR WEEK-END. NO FRESH CASES. The local health authorities had no notification of smallpox on Friday or Saturday, there being an apparent lull in the spread of the epidemic. The local doctors have all been engaged vaccinating, and the Government vaccinator (Dr McCaw) has been kept particularly busy. The medical profession look upon vaccination as the only means to stop the spread of the disease, and this course is also strongly advocated by the Health authorities. Fresh supplies of lymph jrrived on Saturday and have been issued to all doctors. The two notifications mentioned in the Press Association telegram from Dunedin as having been received from Invercargill, relate to cases reported earlier in the week.
