LATE SPORTING

PHOTOGRAPHING CLOSE FINISHES C.J.C. CONSIDER THE PROPOSAL. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 27 At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club Mr 11. P. Biidie remarked that on occasions there had been dissatisfaction over the placing of first, second and third horses. lie wondered if instantaneous photographs could not be taken of the finishes of races. From photographs which he had seen in illustrated papers he considered this was practicable and the judge would be fortified in his decisions if he had photographs of the results of races. A member remarked there would he one difficulty' in that the public would not like to be kept waiting for a quarter of an hour until a photographic plate was developed in the case of a close finish. Mr Bridge: The public would have an interest in the true decision ami the time lost would not he much matter. It was agreed to submit the recommendation to the committee. THE JOCKEYS’ DISPUTE. THE C.J.C. CHAIRMAN COMMENTS. (Special to the Times.)

CHRISTCHURCH, May 27. , At the annual meeting of the Canterbury 1 Jockey Club to-day the chairman (Mr Alex Boyle.) made the following references to the jockeys’ dispute;— “In my address last year 1 referred to the ' highly unsatisfactory state of riding and the very grave doubts in the mind of the public regarding the conduct of many jockeys. I regret to say' that this season lias shown no improvement and there appears very little chance of righting matters under present conditions. The general unrest throughout (he world has of late become apparent in an attempt to form a Jockeys’ Association, whereby it is suggested that the conduct of racing is to be controlled by that body. This, of course, is an absurd and ill-advised movement, but there is no doubt improvements can and should be made in the various matters regarding the terms under which the jockeys now are employed, and, personally', I feel sure that the Racing Conference will not hesitate to rectify any just grievance! that exist.” FOOTBALL. RUGBY UNION. The weekly meeting of the Southland Rugby' Union was held in the Orphans’ Club rooms last night, there being present Messrs A. Dcrbie (chairman I), L. Foster, G. Boyce, T. Meredith, A. H. Courtis, J. Scully, I. Jenkins, D. R. Campbell and A. Rowe. A player who was reported for rough play, tripping and striking a player, appeared in person and admitted the. tripping, and in answer to the charge of striking a player after the match said that he was not aware that the referee had any jurisdiction over players after the game. It was decided to disqualify' the offender for six months. The Western District notified that Mr A. Liddell had been chosen to confer with the Southland selectors with regard to the choosing of the Southland team. It also requested that, more time be given when a town team was travelling into the country, to permit of better arrangements being made.—The request was granted. It was decided to grant discharged men, who had lost a limb in the war free passes, which could be had on application to the secretary, for all games. A special vote of thanks was carried to the men of the St. John Ambulance Brigade for their work in attending to injured players last season. FIXTURES, JUNE 3. SENIOR.
