SETTLEMENT OF SOLDIERS. SUMMARY OF OPERATIONS. The' Minister of Lands has made available some particulars, says the Dominion, as to where nil the nineteen millions expended by flic Government on the repatriu Ron of the soldiers lies gone. A little more than eighteen millions has been spent on the settlement of soldiers on land, although some of this expenditure, upwards of a million and a-half, is not effective yet. as the land purchased has not been offered for selection. A little more than a million has been expended on other Ivanthes of repatriation aetivitv. The gross total Is ATD.Or.A.SD I. Following arc details as -supplied by the Minister:— Settled on Settlement Land.— (a) On subdivided purchase estates, 1014 men on 280.57G acres; (bl on estates purchased by the Crown on behalf of soldiers or groups of .-olificr under section 3 of the Act, 195 on 30,095 Settled on Grown Land and National Endowment Land.- SO9 on 897.908 acres. Assisted to purchase Private Land under Section 2 of the Act.—47so on 911,52-1 acres. Total on Rural Land.—OS.sß on 2.120,103 acres. Assisted to Purchase Town Dwellings.— 0820. Total number assisted.--13.084. The cost was analysed In' the Minister as follows: Under Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Act:— (ai Advanced for stock and improve ments, £1,854,034. (b) For purchase of private land, £7,181,004. (c) For purchase of town dwellings, £4,-■ 454.708. Total, £13.490.430. Under Lands for Settlement Act.—Capi tal value of 203 estates purchased compris mg 210.991 acres, and offered to soldiers, £2,834,198. Total expenditure in providing 13. (334 men with homes or farms £10,324, In addition 1 lie Government has pur ■based tinder the Lands for Settlement Act 01 estates comprising 206,688 acres, which ue now being subdivided and prepared for ettlement - at a cost of £1,()50.')71. The total outlay by the Land ami Land Purchase Departments is thus £18,005, 195.
