The over.-ca steamer Opa’.v.s, which is discharging West of England cargo at Fort Chalmer.-, and also taking in bunker supplies, from the collier N'gakuta, is expected to get aw;ay from Fort Chalmers to-day to complete discharge, and also to load, at the Bluff. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Remuera. which left Lyttelton yesterday is due to-day at Fort Chalmers. She will finish loading at Wellington, whence she sails about June S fur Southampton and London via Panama. NEW LINER FOR SAN FRANCISCO- - SERVICE.

Important additions are being made to the fleer of steamers operated by the Oceanic S.S. Company in the Sydney-ban trancisco service.

Advices received recently by Mr V. A. Sproul, the Sydney manager of the company. stare that the principals in San Francisco had completed negotiations for the purchase of the former Austrian Lloyd liner Martha Washington, at one time well known in the Atlantic passenger service. This steamer will be employed in conjunction with the Ventura ami Suiimim, the three boats running a three-weekly service, with mails, passengers, anti cargo across the Pacific.

The Martha Washington is a vessel of 8312 terns gross. She was built by Messrs Russell and Co., Glasgow, in 1908. and, as a passenger ship, was popular with the travelling publi" on the Atlantic route. In addition, the company have already secured the cargo steamer Las Vegas for the trade, and she will leave ban Francisco within the next day or rwo with 9000 tons of cargo, principally case oil, for the Commonwealth. She will call at Sydney, Newcastle, and Brisbane, and will he employed as an intermediate cargo boat, in connection with the Oceanic S.S. Company's 6an Francisco Mai! Line.

Incorporated with the Oceanic S.S. Company’s line, steamers will, from now on, proceed to Sydney under the auspices fit the General Steamship Corporation of San Francisco. These steamers will run between Fan Francisco. New Zealand, and Sydney, subsequently taking coal to the Philippine Islands, and returning thence- to San Francisco, AH the steamers of the line will he to the asrency of. and operated by. the Oceanic S.S. Company.

The Dominion Meteorologist reports: The weather has been cold and changeable generally, with scattered showers. Moderate to strong south-west winds have predominated, and atmospheric pressure has been unsteady. Present indications are for strong southerly winds with a westerly tendency and c.old, squally conditions, with heavy showers in many parts of the country; barometer unsteady, but rising everywhere soon.
