NAUTICAL CASUALTIES

STEAMER STRANDED. ' the crew safe. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 24. News was received at Wellington to-day that the small steamer Aorere is a total wreck at Rangitikei beach. No further particulars are to hand. The vessel went ashore during the recent heavy gale. THE STEAMER INGA. EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE. WELLINGTON, May 25. The inter-state cargo steamer Inga was taken up on Wellington patent slip at noon yesterday to repair the damage to her hull, resulting from her recent contact with rocks in the South Taranaki Bight. Examination yesterday afternoon showed that the Inga’s hull had been damaged to the extent of several thousand pounds. There are several holes aft, one of which located on the port side, about 4ft above the level of the keel, is large enough for a man to enter. On the starboard there are several smaller holes about the same position. Tho vessel is also badly dented amidships and forward; in fact there is very little of. the ship’s bottom that is not marked. Arrangements have been made for the temporary patching of the Inga's hull and the vessel will subsequently go to Sydney for permanent repairs. Those who viewed the damage wonder at the Inga having managed to keep afloat till she reached Wellington.
