Dr James Fitzgerald has been appointed by the Government to a vacancy on the University Council, caused by the resignation of Mr John Ross.
Messrs James Milne, John Macdonald and David Marshall, Southland’s delegates to the Board of Trade Conference, left for Wellington by the afternoon express yesterday. Mr E. Kellett, M.P., was reported on Sunday night to be making good progress towards recovery after his operation, which was performed on Friday morning.—Otago Daily Times.
Mr L. Wallis was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr Freddy of the secretaryship of the St. John Ambulance Association, at its meeting last night.
At the meeting of the St. John Ambulance Association held in the brigade rooms last night, a vote of appreciation was carried to Mr F. W. Freddy for the work ho had done for the Society in the offices he has held.
At last night’s meeting of the St. John Ambulance Association the following first aid certificates were granted. Messrs A. C. Finlayson, A. Corbett, M. Ronald, < and Mrs G. M. Chapman, and Messrs L. Wallis, D. M. Clode and T. Hide. The following obtained advanced first aid certificates Messrs J. Bryson, A. Lennie, Wm. McLeod, and G. Skipworth. There will be a contest this year for the election of two members of the University Council to represent the Court of Convocation, Dr Marshall Macdonald having agreed to the request of a number of graduates that he should offer himself as a candidate. The retiring members are the Rev. Dr Cameron and Dr Church.
Hie Rev. William Douglas died on Friday at his residence, Hastings. The late Mr Douglas was one of the outstanding figures in Presbyterian Assemblies for many years, and his kindly nature endeared him to his associates and all those to whom he ministered. Mr Douglas was S3 years of age, and was ordained and inducted to the charge of Akaroa in 1874. He was in Hokitika from 1881 to 1907, and resigned to take charge of the new parish of Evans Bay in 1907. In 1913 he retired from active duties, and has resided since in Havelock and Hastings, where he has done much work for the Church as a relieving minister. Mr Douglas, was Moderator of the General Assembly in 1882, and was for many years convener of the Assembly Committee for Missions amongst the Chinese of New Zealand. His scholastic attainments were of a very high order, and he was an authority on Greek literature. Mr Douglas was a widower, and leaves two daughters, the Misses Man,' and Maggie Douglas.
