Wheat of milling quality has been coming forward and passing into the hands of the gristers. The sales included a mixed line of 750 sacks composed of Redchatf and Dreadnought, but the remainder of the business clone was in small lines ranging from 300 sacks downwards.
Oats have been offering fairly freely, but in the absence of shipping facilities and no storage accommodation available, merchants have refrained from purchasing to any extent. A few modest lines changed hands at country stations, the net prices being 5/- for A grade Cartons, and 4/10 and 4/11 for B’s. Some parcels of ryecorn were dealt in at 7/- net at country stations. Though an improved tone pervades the stock market, business has not become active. There is some inquiry for good breeding ewes and hill lambs, but neither of these classes of sheep has been forthcoming. Transactions during the week have for the most part been confined to fat animals, sales of which have been made in varying lines at the following prices:— Fat wethers, 34/- to 30/-; ewes, 31/6 for heavyweights, and from 23/6 to 26/- for lighter sorts; lambs, from 26/- to 28/-. A line of 200 sound-mouthed ewes changed hands at 22/-, and a line of 400 lambs in forward condition found a buyer at 23/-. No business in store cattle during the week. Fat steers were dealt in at from £l3 up to £lO 10/-, the top money being given for a nice line, and fat heifers were sold at £lO. Dairy cattle of quality find ready buyers, and during the week a herd of about 20 spring-calving cows brought under the hammer at a clearing sale realised an average of £l4 10/-.
