of no less than two Gamps, as against none in London. What can they think of a country in which they can no longer set their lips to it when they are so disposed? Some New Publications. —“A Remedy Against Sin." by W. B. Maxwell is published by Hutchinson's. It is a novel on the Divorce Question, criticising severely the Brtsh law. ‘'Dan Mr Fortune’’ is a "new” kind of detective story by 11, (’. Bailey, who has given ns many line yarns. Methuen & Co. publish the work. One of the big sellers in the Old Country at present is “The Wider Way", a novel by Diana Patrick, which has run quickly through three editions. Winifred Graham's "Falling Waters" is also selling briskly. Macmillan and Co, published Fir George Arthur's "Life of Lord Kitchener" soon after Faster. The book is in three volumes with portraits ami plans, and has prefaces by the Manilas of Salisbury and Karl Haig. It deals exhaustively with the public career of Lord txi. "iiener, but it is said that the biography reveals many unsuspected, or at lea.- 1 unrecognised, traits in Ids character which may b- expected to add greatly to the interest of the narrative. A third edition is nearly ready of Dr Bernard Bose.nquet’s well-known work on "The dhdow ideal Theory of the State." It will be published soon by Macmillan and Co. In. the new edition several pages have been added to the Introduction, some footnotes have been in-erted, and the Index ha*' been enlarged. So far a.s possible, the author hen* avoided re-writing the text, as he thinks it fairer to the reader to give him the means of following the developments of a writer’s thought together with its reasons.
